Frequently Asked Questions

The following page will hopefully provide most of the information you might need, but please feel free to contact the instructor if you have any other questions, worries or concerns.

Who can come to the classes?
Classes are open to anyone over the age of 15, subject to basic minimum levels of health and fitness (see below).

Am I too unfit or unhealthy to attend?
The difficulty of the class can be adjusted to suit each individual, so beginners are just as welcome as experienced exercisers. However, if you have have done literally no exercise for years or have certain medical conditions then it might be that the class won't be appropriate for your first steps towards fitness.

The instructor will chat with you before your first class and will let you know if they think there is any reason why you shouldn't take part. They will also be happy to discuss possible alternatives which may be more appropriate.

Will I look daft in front of people who are mega fit and have been coming for ages?
No! The class is very friendly, everyone has different fitness levels, and everyone understands what it's like when you first attend. Your instructor will carefully adjust the class to make sure nobody gets 'left stranded', whilst at the same time offering options that will keep more experienced participants happy.

What clothes should I wear?
Comfy clothing which does not restrict movement (e.g. shorts or leggings and a t-shirt, leotard, tracksuit, etc.). The most commonly-worn clothing at this class is t-shirts and leggings or shorts.

What about footwear?
You will need to wear appropriate exercise shoes e.g. aerobic shoes, step shoes, cross-trainers or other trainers. For your safety you will not be allowed to take part in the class without appropriate footware.

What else do I need to bring?
You may like to bring a towel or sports drink, but mats are provided for floorwork and water is also freely available.

Do I have to sign up for a course of classes?
No! We don't make people sign up for long courses - that way you can stop any time you like.

How do I book and pay for classes?
You do not usually need to book classes in advance, but are welcome to do so if you prefer. Classes are still only £3.00 and can be paid for by cash or cheque when you attend.

Do step clases cause knee problems?
Step classes should not cause knee problems, but might in some cases be unsuitable for people who already have knee trouble. Please ask your doctor or the instructor prior to the class if you have any concerns.

Can I bring my kids?
Unfortunately there is no creche facility at the venue, so children may not be brought to the class.

Is there a car park?
Yes, there is plenty of parking space.

Are there any toilet/changing facilities?
There are no specific changing rooms, but the (recently refurbished) toilets may be used for changing if needed.

Is the instructor well qualified?
Yes! Your instructor has SHAPE/RSA/Sports Council/AFTA/AFAC/ACHPER* Fitness Leader qualifications, and is an officially registered Step Reebok Instructor. They have taught over 3,700 classes in both the UK and Australia, and attended over 320 hours of training courses and workshops. They have been teaching classes in Burley for over 19 years.

What sort of music do you use?
The music changes weekly and covers a wide variety of styles from modern pop to disco, rock 'n' roll to country, and from show tunes to movie themes.

Does the class raise money for the Conservative Party?
No! Although held in the Burley Conservative Club, the class is totally independant and not linked to any political party. Proceeds do not benefit the Conservative Party in any way.
